At Seven Care Services, we support individuals with autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, and mental health conditions across the UK. We’ve seen first-hand the sharp rise in referrals for ADHD assessments in recent years—and we’re not alone. But new research has offered much-needed clarity: ADHD itself isn’t becoming more common. The surge we’re witnessing is due to greater awareness and understanding, not a spike in prevalence.
A recent international study led by King’s College London, analysing data from 40 studies across 17 countries, found no clear evidence that the true rate of ADHD has increased since 2020. Instead, researchers believe more people are seeking support because the condition is finally being talked about—and taken seriously.
The Power of Recognition
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects concentration, energy levels, impulsivity, and time management. It impacts roughly 3–4% of UK adults and 5% of children and young people—but until recently, many went undiagnosed.
The lead researcher, Dr Alex Martin, noted that this demand doesn’t signal a new epidemic, but rather highlights how many people were missed in the past. For years, ADHD was either misunderstood or dismissed, especially in adults and in girls and women, who often present with less “typical” traits.
Thanks to advocacy, media coverage, and social platforms, many individuals are now realising that their lifelong struggles could be rooted in undiagnosed ADHD—and are finally seeking help.
Assessment Backlogs and the Need for Action
Unfortunately, the healthcare system is still catching up. According to NHS England, over 550,000 people are currently waiting for an ADHD assessment, with an additional 20,000 new referrals every month—a 13% rise on last year.
This situation has reached crisis point. People are waiting months or even years for support, during which time they may struggle in work, school, or family life. At Seven Care Services, we believe everyone deserves a timely, high-quality assessment to help them better understand their needs and strengths.
That’s why we offer private autism and ADHD assessments through our expert multidisciplinary teams. We follow NICE guidelines and use recognised tools such as ADOS-2 and ADI-R, ensuring every assessment is evidence-based, person-centred, and neurodiversity-affirming.
Real Lives, Real Impact
A powerful quote from the BBC article featured a woman named Alex, who described life before her ADHD diagnosis as “exhausting.” She couldn’t maintain routines or cope with day-to-day demands—until she finally accessed a diagnosis privately. That support changed her life and helped her become a more confident parent.
Unfortunately, many cannot afford to go private. This is why system-wide change is essential. Better funding, faster pathways, and broader recognition are needed—not only for diagnosis but also for ongoing support.
Unlocking Strengths, Not Just Managing Symptoms
Experts agree: while ADHD medications are generally safe and effective, there’s a growing need to invest in non-drug treatments, like therapy, coaching, and skill-building. ADHD is not just a condition to be “treated”—it’s a difference to be understood. Many individuals with ADHD bring creativity, focus, passion, and innovation when supported appropriately.
