The training was named in honour of Oliver McGowan, a young man with autism and a mild learning disability who tragically lost his life due to a lack of understanding and appropriate care. His parents, Paula and Tom McGowan, have since campaigned tirelessly to ensure that health and social care staff across the UK receive proper training to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future. 

 

The training is designed to provide staff with a comprehensive understanding of the specific needs of individuals with learning disabilities and autism. It covers essential areas such as effective communication, recognising and responding to behavioural needs, and ensuring that care practices are person-centred and inclusive.
